There's some people that suggest that when you are sad, you tend to pay attention to yourself. You become withdrawn and introspective. Very aware of your body and mind and not very aware of the external world.
There have been moments in this past year where I was completely absorbed in my own thoughts and sadness had truly taken over my emotions. COVID19 really amplified that feeling (for everyone), but it also gave me a chance to look deeper inside of myself and ask some hard questions.
This piece was the first of this series, which I started in May 2021. I had no idea what I was going to paint when I put my brush on this canvas. I just knew I was feeling sad and needed to paint it out. In one sitting, I built this scene. Something told me that I needed to calm down, loosen up, and focus on what mattered. When I stepped away from the canvas, I was delightfully surprised as well as relieved. It’s as if in that moment, I had released a tension that I had been feeling towards my art and a very calming presence appeared. To this day, I am still unsure exactly what question this piece answered for me. All I knew was that it was the beginning of a beautiful new journey. This was the first piece to my new “Reflect” series.
