There is a tendency for artists to want to experiment with everything, do everything and include everything in their work. But by trying to do too much, it can risk obscuring the message. It takes not only skill, but a certain amount of humility and confidence in your artwork to leave it at the right spot and call it “done”. For me, this has been a skill I’ve been working on greatly this past year. I still have a ways to go.
Keeping my work simple and precise has allowed me to form some direction in my work and a different kind of confidence then I previously had with my art. Before, I thought :
The more detail - the better.
The longer it took to make - the better
The more struggles and sweat put in - the better.
I learned that it doesn’t always have to be this way, and sometimes art can speak to someone simply because it look nice. I decided to stop myself from building upon this piece in order to practice this skill. I can confidently say that I love where I left it and to me, it doesn’t need anything more or anything less.
